This trail is designed to be an outlet for people who love to fish. It is also intended to be affordable enough for those who have always wanted to fish tournaments, have just begun to fish tournaments, or just refuse to pay $200 in order to fish a tournament. It is meant to be an avenue to meet and learn from others who share your love for competitive bass fishing. There will be no $25,000 purses or shiny new bass boats given away, but neither of these are as good as the look on your buddies face when you pull that 8lb.'er out of your live well. So call up a buddy, tell him to grab a $20 bill, and meet you at lake.
The History of The Poor Mans Trail
Poor Man's Trail was created and originally directed by Larry Worrell. It was started in 2009 after a long standing federated bass club fell apart due to lack of participation. The idea was to start a trail that was inexpensive, competitive, and lacked many of the rules and fees that can bog down some clubs. The trail would have a series of tournaments followed by a Classic based on cumulative weights. The trail would be open to anyone who cared to fish with a minimum of restrictions. The trail has since changed directors, but has kept the same format and has continued to grow and flourish.
The first tournament was held March 14th of 2009 at West Point. The
weather was cold and rainy and we were still able to draw 18 boats. Mike
Boardman and Steve Jones, who still fish the trail today, won the tournament
with 13.26 lbs., anchored by the tournaments big fish of 5.09 lbs. With a group
of guys who share great friendships and a love of competitive bass fishing, the
Trail should continue to grow and prosper for years to come.
